The warm air rises, and the cold air moves into the space the warm air creates. This is where wind comes from. I think it's called convection currents.

Cool air sinks. But far under ground, that cool air will warm up in the lava.

The cold air goes right below the ground, but not too far. If you take a shovel, dig up earth, and feel the earth, you will notice it is cold and damp. Water is underground and little bits of air as well, entering through tiny holes in the dirt.

I think on very hot days, the cold air warms up and doesn't go anywhere, it only gains temperature.

First off, cold air can be forced to rise and warm air can be forced to sink. It depends on what is going on in the atmosphere.

Further, air cannot go down anymore once it hits the ground. For example, in a high pressure, the air sinks, hits the ground, then fans out in all directions. This is called divergence.

Air can be heated by radiation released by the earth. The sun warms the ground, and the ground re-emits the radiation, which is absorbed in part by the air above it.

Finally, as air sinks, it warms by the process known as adiabatic warming. For every kilometer it sinks, the air warms approximately 9.8 degrees Celsius. This keeps us from getting cold stratospheric air down here.

Hot and cold air both rise, sink, and move left or right or some combination of these.

Cold air descends, but not usually to the level of the magma - just to the earth. Areas with cold air usually have low pressure, too, so air will move from the areas with high pressure to the areas with low pressure. However, the cold air can also absorb heat - from the sun or from the earth.

it goes down...part of a never ending cycle or hot air cooling down & dropping...cold air warming up & rising...round & round it goes....
