On the street, waves in your direction, do you wave back or check out if he/she is waving to somebody else?

i wave and usually look like a jack *** when they are waving at some one behind me

I get a little confused.. have to look around to check if there's anyone else there (afterall i dont wanna look like a fool waving back!)... Which has happened! Lol
If there is noone there then i just give a half-smile and wave back.... and move on!

I usually wave, and give them a big smile, but then if I realize that they were waving to someone else, I feel like an idiot.

I don't do anything, unless the person waves again as if trying to get my attention. I think we've all embarrassed ourselves by waving back before... :-)
