May seem a stupid question as I don't own a phone, but does a Pay As You Go phone need to pay anything other than the cost of the handset and the topups?

Not any that I'm aware of. I use a Samsung phone I got at Staples free after rebate. All you have to pay for is the refill minute cards which come in amounts from $10 - $100. Research your options, there are a ton of pay as you go phones out there, and I imagine most of them if not all don't charge a rental fee.

Usually not, i have had pay as you go phones before, and have never had to pay any kind of fee. pretty much what you said, the only things you have to pay for are the phone, and the cards.

I think it depends on what company you are with but I have T-Mobile and they are great. There is no hidden cost. You just buy the phone you like and purchase minutes as you need them. If you don't use the minutes. they do expire over time. That's it, no hidden cost, no fees, nothing.

with a tracfone, you buy the phone you want and the minutes and that's all. you just pay for more minutes as you need them.
