God, I remember reading everything L.J. Smith wrote when I was a teenager!
My favorite author of all is Stephen King. A lot of people are under the misconception that he writes pure horror and that is just not the case. I started out with "Eye's of the Dragon" which is more sci-fi. Other novels are pure fiction with a bit of the fantastical thrown in. Of course, my favorite (if I had to pick just one) is the Stand.
I just love Stephen King's voice. He is so prolific and crosses genres easily.

Mine is Charles Dickens because of his commentary on 19th century England and my favorite book is "A Tale of Two Cities"
But, right up there hanging with him is an author Anya Seton who died in the 1960"s I believe but she wrote a book called Dragonwyck that is the perfect gothic romance. It was re-released last year and I would encourage anyone who likes gothic themes to read this.

Depends on what type of mood I'm in. If I'm in the mood for a sci-fi thriller, I go with Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park is my favorite). If I'm in the mood for a fantasy, I go with Raymond Feist (Krondor: The Betrayal is my favorite).
Right now I am reading Stephen King novels (I'm on my second -- The Stand. The Shining was the first), so time will tell if he becomes a favorite author of mine.

Lovecraft is unsurpassed by my view in genre of Horror. And was one of the early fathers of Sci-Fi, Discovery, Mystery, and other Weird Tales. H.P. Lovecraft has brought me some of the most beautiful and most Terrifying visions I've ever had reading a story. If you decide to look him up I say trie the web you can obtain many of his works for free.

Stephen King is my all-time favorite. I also like Robert Ludlum, Orson Scott Card and Neil Gaiman. It's kinda like movies or music, there are too many good ones to just have one favorite.

My favorite author is the late Patrick O'Brian, the brilliant writer of the Master and Commander series of sea stories. He is acknowledged as one of, if not, the greatest writer of descriptive adventure fiction.

Janet Evanovich - her early Stephanie Plum series made me laugh outloud. (Although lately they are not quite the same quality) I like being able to read something just for fun and to put my troubles away for a short while.
