I have exactly that. It overheated twice this year (its first year). Grrr. I had to rebuild the OS and re-install all software and re-load all personal information. Fortunately, I have another laptop (a 2-year-old IBM A31 IBM Thinkpad, BTW) that I maintain as a "mirror image", so that helped. Also, technical support from HP was superb.
As it turns out, fans on most (all?) laptops are on the bottom. Overheating is endemic. You have to keep them well-ventilated. Keep them somewhat elevated. I keep mine on flat surfaces, not soft mushy laps. Maybe, even consider one of those USB-powered fan-boards (about $30) that augments the laptop fan to keep the laptop ventilated.
Good luck!
