DEAR FRIEND,
YOU RAISED AVERY GOOD QUESTION INDEED.
Most people think that they are not INDEPENDENT and they are the puppets in the hands of FATE or GOD and subject to the powerful environment they are in.
The FACT IS AN ABSOLUTE NO.
Human beings have been bestowed with a wonderful power called WILL POWER.
If you have a strong will power, your environment or fate can't do any thing.YOU CAN MOULD YOUR SELF LIKE WHAT YOU WANT YOUR SELF TO BE.
Indian scriptures long long back proclaimed it.
You are not a slave to any thing. You are not programmed to be something. If you give up and do not resist and use WILL POWER then you are being moulded as per the force acting upon you.
Decide youself WHAT YOU WANT TO BE...Then try with hundred percent effort and with full concentration and commitment....SURELY YOU WILL BECOME WHAT YOU WANTED.
There is a lot I can add here from scriptures, written many thousands of years back, declaring humans as fully independent and proving they have the POWER to make them selves what they want.
So,the Environment, the effect of elders etc do exercise their power. But it is upto YOU to let that force act or not.
Determine yourself.....work hard.....bother not about the environment.....with full WILL POWER go ahead.YOU WILL ACHIEVE WHAT YOU WANT.

Yes, I believe we have the power to change anything that we really want too. All things are possible, just maybe not in our lifetime. But everything we do can make a change. And yes we can change our personalities. And yes, outside influences can have a major impact on our personalities.
If something really tragic happens in our childhood, we do have the power to change how we think and feel about that situation and how we can change ourselves to either overcome it or be devoured by it.
It's your life and you live it, outside forces do have an impact, so do family dynamics.
I also do think that our lives could very possibly be programmed, but we still have the power to change the path to a new one.

I think environment and example is a much higher cause to ones personality, than their childhood. Look at the way you were just two years ago. For me I have a new group of friends and a new school, and my outlook on life is completely altered.

To the extent that we are willing to allow it to. I have known children raised in alcoholic households where they were totally abused and still they motivated themselves to rise above that put themselves through school and became admirable, professionals, responsible parents, and productive members of society. The past is a factor in a person's life but not the only one and certainly not a free pass for bad behavior.

We can change our personalities,
the environment has a small say in shaping personality,
it is the inner desire and drive that has the maximum say in altering our personality.

I think you can grow and change everyday. people you meet and things you just hear can affect the way you think and act later. just learning something new can change yourself.
I think you always have the same character your whole life and you cant really change that. but you can change the things you know and like all the time and that can add to your personality

The only one that has the power to change you is yourself. You have to decide what you want to change and do it. Most of us enjoy who we are too much to make changes that we know need to be made though.
