Conservatives say: Any restrictions on the sale and purchase of guns will lead to all hunter's guns being taken away forcibly
Gay civil unions will lead to marriages between dog and man.

They do not see that:
--Abortion restrictions can lead to contraceptive restrictions
--Wiretapping of terrorists can lead to pervasive invasion of privacy of all citizens
--Suspension of habeus corpus for accused terrorists can lead to American's held for months or years without charges or trial

WHY?

Why do liberals deny the theory of slippery slope except for abortion?

2007-04-19 05:18:31 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 2 0

Some would say that is the liberals way too, but the truth is that as the population increases so does control over them.
As for restrictions on guns and them being taken away forcibly is hard to conceive but it's been done in other countries but the bad guys still get the guns they need no matter what the law says and the crime rate is still the same so nothing has changed. To change the crime rate we must make the punishment so severe that no one wants to commit a crime.
As for gay civil unions I think that should be allowed but not call it marriage I think that marriage belongs to religion and is between a man and women. To each his own as long as it hurts no one else physically.

I dont believe there is a slippery slope in conservative ideology. You have to recognize that they are very concrete in their thinking and the final objective is always in mind.
for example:
wiretaps-
they dont care if they themselves/Bozo the clown gets a wire tap because they believe that since all they talk about on the phone is when is the next grand flag waving session they arent threatened in anyway, they always discuss whatever talking points fox tells them to.
everyone gets a gun-
they want all the child molesters to have guns as well as themselves. What they believe the outcome will be is less utilization of the death penalty because they will shoot them on the street.
abortion-
complete ban because they know their children were raised good neocons and would never have premarital sex and be in the situation of undesired pregnancy.
gays-
ban this activity entirely because ya some of the cons are gay but they come out get forgiven and then do it all over. Its not right but to err is human. This is the thinking and it makes sense from a certain view. Liberty and Justice for all.

Abortion was legalized in 1973. The birth control pill was 1968.

The US Constitution provides many protections against illegal search and seizure of Americans. Habeas Corpus is alive and well.

You're wrong to assume Conservatives don't care about those issues.

You're absolutely right, and you mention good points on both sides of the aisle.

I wish my party would drop the gun control argument -- a hunter's weapon is not just a weapon, but a tool, or piece of sporting equipment in that case. Also, a hunter's weapon is not very usable as a mass murder weapon (too big, slow reload).

Your first two examples are valid and I agree with them as a conservative. Your other examples, I actually agree with you. Those laws are created for a reason and should NOT be messed with just as our right to bear arms should not be messed with.

I think the whole gay marriage/civil union thing is a slippery slope.

The second amendment is not negotiable.

Gays have no constitutional right to marry.

Even if the Supremes overturn Roe the most that will happen is the States will decide if they want to allow abortion or not.

The Patriot Act was voted into law by Congress not by presidential mandate.

Happy now?

I'm a liberal too, but they would rephrase your question to say, "Why do liberals believe that there is a slippery slope for everything except the things they want?"
If you can't even grasp why they feel the way they do, then you probably aren't moderate enough to even be a good defender of the Democrats.

Well, because the "slippery slope" argument is an additional argument and not the main one.

Hey, take away the slippery slope argument and abortion is still wrong, restriction of the purchase of guns iis still wrong, and gay civil unions are still wrong.

A fallacy is a fallacy. Take each decision at face value.
