I completely support the concept as long as training is performed and proficiency is tested regularly.

I agree 100%. I say the only deterrent to these mass killers is for someone to meet them with an equal or better deadly force. While I admire the police and the job that they do, They are spread way too thin to handle these problems. Seems like when the police show up is after the crime is committed. First responders are needed in the classroom. Armed and trained-- PERIOD

As a current college administrator and a former high school administrator I think your point is ridiculous. I taught in the South Bronx and never needed a gun to protect myself, just street smarts and some quick thinking.
Mass killings are still an anaomoly. They are tragic when they happen, absolutely, but people will always find the weakness in the system. Think Nickel Mines.

Solution #1:
Put gunsafes in every class that can only be accessed with a pin code and only once an emergency alarm has been triggered.
These "Cho in Building" emergency alarms should be place next to all fire alarms so that anybody can set one off after breaking the emergency glass.
Obviously, the alarm should also contact police dispatch and notify everybody in the building.
I would not feel safe having teachers with access to guns in a class any other way because it would be so easy for someone to take it from them and use it.
Any 'Cho Alarm Triggers' inside the class room should be place at opposite sides of the room from the teacher. If a "Teacher Gone Wild" decides to go 'Cho Cho' she would first have to get to the alarm and students would have a fighting chance to stop her. (sorry, it's just my opinion about women during that time of the month)
So I would still feel safe with 'Miss Anger Management Problems' in the class while still having the security of having protection readily available during an emergency.
Solution #2:
Replace the tops of all student tables with removable 3/4" steel tops that have handles on the bottom.
During history class have one special activity each year where students learn how to form "Spartan" formations to protect themselves during surprise visits from 'Cho'.
My apologies to all people still alive named 'Cho'. But it's just so much fun to make fun of people with Korean names! :)
Especially because they always get so upset about it!!!!
You guys are almost as much fung to mekkah fung of as Chinis Pip Pel. :)

A plausible idea would be to install panic buttons like the banks use. Under the edge of the teachers' desks, in the admin offices, etc. This could silently alert police and if linked to an automated system, it could also alert students via text messages and emails.

No, that's stupid. More guns just kill more. People who keep hand guns in their home have a 60% higher chance of killing someone by accident in their own homes. Just imagine a drunk college kid packing a side arm, gets in a fight which happens all the time, people will start blowing each other away in a fit a rage. The stats are very clear, countries that do not alloy guns have very little muder rates,

Look at te Pearl MS school shootigs and how it was stopped. Long story short....the principal of the school had a gun permit and walked a half mile away to his car, (schools are a no gun zone) got his gun came back and was able to save many lives.

Yes in fact lets give third graders guns in case some bad guy breaks into the school.Like with the Amish school house there.
In fact it should be a birthright in America, you get your first gun when you get your social security card. Arm everyone to the teeth, no problems with arise from that at all.
What mass killings on campuses are talking about? One mass killing does not make an epidemic.

We in basic terms might desire to restrict all weapons, yet how might we do this? I agree and dissagree. I agree that instructors and administrator desires a weapon to guard themselves and faculty, yet what if the scholars triumph over the the instructor and the administrator? the two way, it relatively is difficulty. the only way that our childrens would be risk-free is to have securities in college and on the front door. i might agree on checking the e book bag for weapons. Now days, securities are might desire to to guard out babies in college. college might desire to be the main secure place to be, yet no longer anymore. the government desires to concentration on securing our college. it relatively is getting relatively frightening, yet i won't be in a position to be annoying too a variety of of it.

As a former teacher, I think arming the staff would not prevent anything.
Bring back discipline, corporal punishment, and allow prayer in the schools.
None of this happened back in those days.
