The Christian Church had an important role in whole social life in Medieval Europe. The rulers, kings or emperors, were name "Fidei Defensores", or "Defenders of the Fate". Their coronation has been impossible without blessing by the Church. The churches were the first Universities and the "greenhouses of the science".
In Eastern Europe, same as Balkans, the church was the last Citadel of the Christianity, because this part of Europe was occupied by Ottoman Turks, who were Muslims.

The Roman Catholic church was the ruling power for most of Europe during the Middle Ages. The Popes and Cardinals had more power than the kings.

The church had a great impact. It was the major organizational power. Rulers had to tread carefully, lest they find themselves excomunicated.
Crusades (Package holiday with swords and a free T shirt (NIfty white with a red cross)), building churches and cathederals, monesteries, not to mention pilgrimages (Package holiday business), etc. etc.
You can not look at medieval life without the church being involved somehow.
