I think that its a possibility for maybe 200 years. Not in this generation of life though. I'm 14, I don't even think my children will witness it. But if it does happen. It would be pretty scary. IRobot. Yuup. Blahahha.

It is technology. Robots are used in factories today for doing mondain jobs. We will see more robotic functions in the not so distant future. Robots are nothing more than computers. Computers do what they are told. Robots/computers would need "artificial intelligence" before they could function in a human like society making decisions on the fly. Until then, robots/computers will do only what they are programmed to do and make decisions according to their program. Computers make decisions because the programmer coded those choices and the reason for making those choices. Without the proper programming you get "does not compute". Most human intelligence is "artificial" so don't expect the so call "artificial intelligence" to become reality - at least not anytime soon. Decisions will still be made by programmed logic. I do not forsee the creation of a functioning brain that operates independantly as with humans.

Computer/robots will never run or destroy the world. At least not by themselves. Computers and robots will become a very much larger part of our lives. If a computer ruins the world, it will be because some idiots put to much faith in the computer and the programmer. For example, if our military put complete control of our national defense in a computer without human oversight, a system bug or rogue programmer could cause some major screw ups thus destroying our defense capabilities or start some action like launching missiles. Computers should always be a tool and not left alone. As long as humans build them and program them, error will happen.

I agree with the previous answer that said probably not for the next 200 years or so. While our society HAS made some huge technological strides in some areas of life, we have lagged ridiculously behind in others. It sometimes seems like one step foreward and three steps back!

Reading and hearing all the glowing prediction for "the future" that were made in ages past, we have only to look around us and see that most of them have NOT materialized.
Writers as far back as the 1800s (and some even further back than that) have projected their ideas of what life would be like by the end of the 20th century, and very few of their utopian visions ever made it off the printed page and into reality.

Today, the Discovery Channel hosts a program called "FUTURE WEAPONS" in which a typically macho-looking guy demonstates weapons of war with astounding capabilities and mind-boggling battlefield potential. Yet our beloved brothers, sons, husbands and fathers (and nowdays, that even includes some sisters, daughters, wives and mothers) serving in combat areas today are fighting and dying with the same kinds of equipment their fathers were using in Viet Nam and in some cases, even the same kinds of equipment their grandfathers were using in WWII, and have probably never seen or heard-of ANY of these "Future Weapons".

There may be a lot on the laboratory drawing boards around the country and the world, but precious little of it will ever find its way into solid reality. Only those few ideas which the big money interests see as potential sources of more wealth and more power will ever see the light of day, and I can't imagine the idea of "robots taking over the world" as fitting very well into that scenario.

Remember the industrial revolution.

Loads of people were kicked out of jobs because 'machines' took their jobs. We seem to be doing ok now though.

I honestly dont think that robots could ever be made sentient enough to be able to rise up and rule the planet. thats just in films. of course thats not to say we could end up being so dependent upon them, that we become slaves to our own creation.

But if they ever did rise up and start to eradicate the plague that is human life. All we have to do is pour our coffee over the keyboards.

They already have, you just are not aware of it yet, You think there are people required for you to make a phone call, or Connect to the internet, in some factories machines make other machines!

All we're waiting for now is them to wake up and take a look around!
