Oh, the tyranny of choices.

I discovered fantasy and science fiction in middle school. Anne McCaffrey's Harper Hall trilogy was my absolute favorite. (I still want to live there some day.) Narnia was another favorite read (and re-read).

Other authors to consider:
Diana Wynn Jones
Mercedes Lackey
Lois McMaster Bujold
Marion Zimmer Bradley

Oh, and don't neglect the "classics". Jane Austen is good if you aren't like me (I can't stand it when people are mortally embarrassed). Try Pride & Prejudice first -- it has a likeable protagonist.

A Web search for "middle school suggested reading" turned up pages and pages of various lists; here's a pretty comprehensive one:

Of all the books I read when I was your age (about 35 years ago)... The one I will always remember is "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. It was one of the hottest books out there in my day. (I know times have changed)... But it dealt with the reason behind the formation of the labor unions, AFL/CIO. It described in great detail some of the deplorable conditions American workers endured on a daily basis. It opened my eyes and my mind. And considering the short amount of time it took me to read and the lasting impact it has had on my, I would consider it a very good investment. Keep on reading - you'll never regret it.

Then there are always among the hidden series. I read that when I was in middle school and it was good.
Ella Enchanted.
Midnighters
Harry Potter
If you like historical fiction, Anne Rinaldi is a good author for that.
Anything by Mary Higgins Clarke is good.

Try a Robert Cormier book. There are also alot of good "fantasy" series. Try the Ink Triology or The Edge Chronicles.

Gary Paulsen is great also. And so is S.E. Hinton.
