As a civil engineer I wear boots with steel toe caps when I'm on site. It is actually a health and safety requirement to wear them.
In my private life I wear boots when I'm hiking so that I have footwear suitable for the terrain and so that I don't sprain my ankles.
The rest of the time at work I wear dress shoes and outside of work I like to wear trainers.
So, no I'm not trying to make a statement when I'm wearing boots.

What do you mean? I used to be in the military. I wore boots there. I used to work in transportation, I wore safety boots there. I camp allot, I wear hiking boots when I do.
Sometimes you have to wear boots. I prefer sandals personally but don't see any statement with wearing boots.

No we live in the country out here so most of the guys I know where cowboy boots. That's because most of the time they are out in the fields working with cattle and livestock and tennis shoes just don't do the trick.

maybe, my husband wears steel toe boots because he works on an oil rig and regulations say he has to. He also wears boots at home because we have horses and spurs fit best on boots. But i see guys dressed in cowboy gear who have never seen a horse much less ridden one and it is just to complete their drug store cowboy look.

Depends on the boots. Either "I'm a metal-head, and I'm trying to be intimidating" or "I'm a hard working man, get out of my way".

Hmmmmm....boots? Could be they like boots. I never analyzed it that deeply.
But, people who are gothic try to make statements. They are rather boring if you ask me.

I don't neccesarily think they are trying to make a statement. Still, everything a person wears does make a statement about them. Sometimes, it says something deep, like, "I am a moody, introspective person who is angry about a lot of things." Sometimes, is says something simple, like "I have very bad taste in footwear."
Usually, it says "all my friends dress like this and I am a sheep."

Yes, but I just hope they're not thinking, "man, these boots clash with my belt buckle" because if they are, I would begin to worry.
