It's your home so you dictate what goes on there. She should acquiesce to you request.
Neither of you should get mad at each other.
Get some of those disposable overshoes for people who wont take off their shoe.

You have a right to ask. Because then they want to keep your deposit to have the carpet cleaned when you move out. So ask people or put up a sign...

*** She may have ugly feet, or holes in her socks... have like a basket of socks, get the cheap kind from the $1.00 store, or buy bulk. That way they do have another option. There are days when I have not done my toes, and I just want to keep my feet covered. Plus wearing socks helps protect the carpet from the oils, sweat, and stuff that comes off of our feet from wearing down the carpet. You know that path I am talking about. You could have some cheap slippers in a basket too, but you can not wash those as easy as some socks... I have wood floors, and make my kid wear socks, we have tons of fun socks, and slipper socks... that is how we handle the problem.

Yes you did have the right. It is your house and if you dont want mud and so forth tracked all on you carpet I understand. I would take mine off. Maybe she had holes in her socks or a foot odor problem. I suggest that you make up a cute sign and hang it on you front door which says if you enter you shoes may not, or something like that. I have a no smoking sign on my front door that I made. Just about everyone in my family smokes and they assume when they come over they can just light up but I have small children so when they come in and they see the sign they already know. Mine says If you cant go without smoking you can not enter our home.

Your home is your castle and if you ask someone to remove there shoes then they should. That being said there are times I would rather not have people see what I have on for socks.
I would and have explained the situation with the carpeting and what I did was have a few pairs in assorted sizes of comfy slippers sitting by my shoe mat so people could still have something on there feet.
This worked really well for me.
Did your friend now ahead of time that she would have to remove her shoes? If she did then she had no reason to be upset.

Well, I don't let people wear shoes in my house either. When they first come over I tell them that I would appreciate if they would please remove their shoes at the door. I also provided a nice bench for them to sit on to do this and a rug for the shoes to be placed on. Also as it is your home you have a right to ask her to remove her shoes. As for her getting angry because you asked I suppose it all depends on the tone and way you phrased your request.

It was not rude of you to ask her to take off her shoes. She should have obliged, since it is YOUR apartment. Many people take their shoes off for this purpose. I do! My bf does! My kids do!! My ex didn't..and well, he's now my ex!! LOL. (kidding on the reason he is my ex, but all that aside)

Although it was rude of her not to oblige to your request, you were not right to get 'mad' at her for not doing so. It was a mild insult. Although, you had more of a right to get 'upset' at her NOT taking off her shoes, than she did getting mad at you for you being mad at her for not submitting to your SIMPLE request. Perhaps she had on a pair of nasty socks, and was embarrassed about it. You never know. I would say, let it go and don't make an issue of it any longer. Its nothing to loose a friendship over.

You are in the right. I would throw someone out who refused to take their shoes off. Or, I would have the carpets cleaned and send them the bill. It is your apartment, and you have the right to ask for whatever you want, and that's the bottom line.

I can understand and relate to you, she should have just respected your wishes because this is what you wanted and it is your house.. you reminded me of a S ex and the City episode where Carrie had to take off her shoes when she went to a baby shower or something, then her shoes were stolen.. cheer up, you have done nothing wrong!

i think you're completely right- i do the same thing with my bamboo flooring. when people come over, just tell them that you have light carpeting and would appreciate them removing their shoes before they come in. you may even want to get a few pairs of cheapie lounge slippers or pedicure thongs to keep at the door so they don't feel odd walking around in barefeet or socks.

Its not rude, I've known people that did that before. It's your house and you have the right to tell your guests to take off there shoes. explain to them why you have that rule and make sure they see that you're not wearing shoes either. If they get mad, thats their deal, don't worry about it.

I don't think it was rude to ask for such a small request. You might want to offer people socks to put on because some people do not feel comfortable taking their shoes off when not at home. Rude it was not and she should not be upset.
