1. Buy seeds for sweet basil. You can find them at Walmart, Kmart, Target, Home Depot and Lowe's and most hardware stores.
2. Use Miracle grow potting soil.
3. Fill a planter with soil, plant seeds as instructed and water.
Check with your finger for dampness, if it feels dry water it, not sloppy wet just nice and moist.
4. Put planter in a nice sunny place.

Start the seeds indoors a month or so before planting them outside. Then you'll get faster results. I typically plant in a peat pot, then put them in something bigger when they outgrow the peat pot. Put them in a warm, bright location, keep them moist but not soggy. When the seedlings get bigger, you can let them dry out slightly between waterings.
My personal favorite for an easy to grow basil is Finissimo Verde A Palla. It's an Italian variety that grows fast, has small leaves, and forms a perfect globe. It's not that easy to find, though, I think you would have to mail order it. I know that Territorial Seed has it, that's where I ordered mine.
Good luck!

If you want easy, go to Target, Home Depot or Lowe's, or Amazon (see link I sent). They have they little pots that have every thing already in them and all you do is add water, sit in a sunny window and watch it grow. They have other pot to grow as well mint, parsley and a few other herbs. I get these for my kids and they watching them sprout and grow. I love using them in my cooking.
