Why did Wimbledon FC have to change their name?

I remember Wimbledon being in the Premiership a few seasons back, sharing their ground with Crystal Palace.

Then they got relegated and that seemed to be the end. I never really knew why they had to change everything, i.e. their name, location etc.

What happened to them? lol

They didn't go bankrupt and the move had nothing to do with being relegated!!

They were thinking of moving for many years, as they wanted to go somewhere where they would get bigger crowds, as their crowds were too small when they played at Plough Lane,Wimbledon and when they were sharing grounds. Most of the local residents in Wimbledon did not want a football team in the area. At one point they even considered moving to Dublin!!

The main reason for changing the name was to make some affiliation with the people from Milton Keynes, so they would follow their 'local' club...also a group of real Wimbledon fans formed the new club AFC Wimbledon as they said they would never follow the club to Milton Keynes!

Wimbledon FC became the MK Dons in Milton Keynes. AFC Wimbledon are now the local Wimbledon team and are still trying to get Plough Lane back from Sainsbury's.

The club was relaunched under its current name on 21 June 2004, nine months after it (as Wimbledon F.C.) relocated to Milton Keynes Dons. It is officially recognised by The FA as the continuation of Wimbledon F.C., but most of that club's original fans no longer support it[citation needed] , having instead founded their own club, A.F.C. Wimbledon, in south-west London, which they regard as the legitimate successor to Wimbledon F.C.

They are now Milton Keynes Dons and that is down to finances and the FA not sanctioning the move - until the threat of legal action forced the move and name change to go ahead - or something like that -
