Most modern laptops have several ways of connecting to the internet.

1. Modem - many have built in internal modems to connect to a phone line and use a dial-up internet service provider. If you already pay for this service at home, you can get access phone numbers from your provider for other cities - this option is of course very slow and requires a phone connection.

2. Network - most also have a built in Ethernet network connection port. If you have broad band internet at home, you can plug in the same cable being used by your home computer and connect to the internet. Again this is a wired connection.

3. Wireless or "WiFi" - most of the newest laptops also have built in "B" (802.11b) or "G" (802.11g) wireless support. These are backward compatible with each other so either is fine. For this to work at home, your internet will have to be connected to a wireless "router" which can broadcast information wirelessly to you laptop - you may or may not already have one of these. I have a "Linksys WRT54g" which is inexpensive (about $50) and easy to set up.

4. "WiFi" hotspots - on the go, you need wireless capability in your laptop and would need to look for a wireless hotspot - which is just a location (cafe, school campus, etc) with a wireless router that allows anybody to connect. You just go to your computers "Networking" windows and click on "Search for Wireless Networks".
