You don't have to. Data on the harddrive will not be affected by a RAM memory upgrade. Even if you install it improperly, you files won't be corrupted. I have once installed an incompatible RAM card on my computer. What happens is your OS will fail to load and you might get a beeping signal when you boot your computer.

No need, files are stored on hard disk. You are upgrading something else. If the PC does not come up properly (like for me last night) take the new RAM out. No problem with your files.
Someone will say yes just to be on the safe side, but NO there is no real reason to.

I've done lots (laptops and desktops) of memory upgrades and module interchanges and I've never damaged an OS nor lost a file.

If you do it right, there is no risk of losing anything but temp files. Those would be lost anyway when you turn off the machine. All is well.
