Bush's handlers thought that VT would be a good photo op. Meanwhile, he wasn't guilty of poor response for the VT ordeal as he was with Katrina, so it was a safe photo-op.

The widely-hated Bush administration is embroiled in so much scandal and intrigue along with an unpopular war of aggression that, despite the somber words, they must have been cheering wildly after the news of the VT murders as it gave them a reprieve in the media until their next scandal begins to unwind and become public.

Bush wasn't in office during Columbine, he was a Texas governor. And No, I do not remember Clinton going there. At least he did go to LA after Katrina. Gore merely looked down from a helicopter on the aftermath of hurricane Andrew, which was easily as much a disaster as Katrina if not moreso. The big difference I think is that it was safe for Gore to go on the ground, but he didn't. New Orleans was toxic and flooded. Takes time to confirm the safety of the president before he is allowed to go there. And on top of that, he disregarded his safety and went to ground zero. Even though it was not safe to even breath the air at the time. Before jumping on the liberal Bush bashing wagon, maybe you should look at your own camp and see what they actually did. Bush is far more compassionate than any Clinton or Gore ever showed.

Its not really up to him. First the secret service have the final say on whether it is safe. Second, he has to be able to get there. Third, in some cases there is no point. Why go to New Orleans? There should have been no one there. There was a mandatory evacuation. It was not safe, there was pollution and disease everywhere. The authorities were trying to get the people out, not have to stop to protect the president. This argument is specious and has no basis in reality, it is just an agenda argument. He wasn't president when Columbine happened, so lets get real here. Clinton was president and no, he did not go.

President Bush, as with all leaders, has the sense to trust the advice of professional security staff, most notably the Secret Service, to advise him on various health or safety aspects of any trip. Fact is, Bush DID tour the Gulf Coast, and I think it was perhaps a day or two after Katrina came through. He did (I seem to recall) a helicopter review of the metropolitan New Orleans area, but spoke in Mississippi, which is, after all, where the actual eye went through. Combined with safety and security, yes, political considerations are taken into account. He tends to be more comfortable with those who are his friends (and Nagin is NOT among that number), just as a UCLA fan is not usually comfortable around equally rabid USC fans. Every one of us (yes, including the President) has the right to make his own choices as to how he spends his time. Considering the blunders were made by state and local officials in Louisiana, the widespread corruption and ineptitude of New Orleans officials (unused school busses?) and the relatively smooth steady process of rebuilding in Mississippi, i happen to think his choice of emphasis was a wise one.

I think part of it is scheduling, and with Katrina there was a safety issue as well.

As for Columbine, he was not president at the time.

Demographics. He shows up where his supporters are. Virginia is a heavy republican state and so he goes to see them. It is also a very industrial state and lower poverty levels there. Who cares about a bunch of poor people who lost everything they have in a storm? Votes is where it counts. Bush knows he's not getting any more votes but he knows his party will.
