My g-g-g-g-g-grandfather was a Hessian soldier who fought for the British in the Revolutionary war. He was captured and held as a POW for 4 years. He was then indentured to a Virginia couple. He worked for them for 2 years then eloped with their daughter, changed his name, and stayed in America.

My Mother's family were DPs, stolen from their homes in Ukraine, in Germany after the war. They lived in a DP camp for a few years before the US would finally allow them to come over. This is after Canada & Brazil both said they met their quota of Ukrainian immigrants. So, I'm first generation on my Mom's side.

My Father's family immigrated from Italy & Poland. Both his parents were born here. My great-grandparents were the typical immigrant story. One brother came over & sponsored another. Then they brought their wives over & had families. Through hard work and dedication to the communty that family has become very well respected.

I came to the US from England.

I am part English, Scottish, Irish with some German, Austrian and Russian thrown in. Oh, and a streak of Welsh. Arguably I have some French as well as I can trace my family back a multitude of generations.

Paternal Grandfather's side from England
Paternal Grandmother's side from Ireland
Maternal Grandfather's side from France (but adopted German-sounding name when arrived here in 1800s)
Maternal Grandmother's side from Ireland and England

All arrived in the 16 or 1700s except for Maternal Grandfather's side (1800s).

My family struggled here for generations. They suffered from generations of alcohol abuse, physical abuse, etc. The first to graduate high school was my grandparents in the 30s. My parents graduated high school and my mother went on to get her master's degree. On my father's side, I am the first to get a college degree. I just keep struggling. I want my daughter and my nieces and nephews to have a better life than previous generations.

My father's family came from Scotland and Ireland. I don't know the particulars of how/why they came to this country. My mother's family came from England on the Mayflower. They were the Fairbanks family, one of the oldest families in America. The Fairbanks House in Deadham, Mass. is one of the oldest homes in this country.
