That sounds like a good idea, but I don't think it could work. Like for my college, we have three separate campuses, so it's huge, so the cost would be outragous, and tuition would probably sky rocket. And then what about all of the people that come visit the college to see if they want to go there, everyday I see groups of people getting tours of the campus. Then there are the activities on campus, we have over three art galleries on campus, sporting events that are open to public, fundraising events, a hotel, concerts, etc.
I wish that something like your talking about could happen but I don't think it is actually possible. The best thing is to have an ironed out emergency plan for the campuses.

No, not too far fetched. I don't want to live in fear, but I think the ID idea is a good idea. Thanks for talking about this in a respectful manner. I keep hearing people talk about political stuff like gun control and people are even making jokes about the VT shootings, and don't even get me started about the media. You are one of the first people I've come upon that has something productive to say after this terrible tragedy. For some of the answerers above, he's not talking about giving up freedom, he's just talking about making campuses safer. I do agree with one answerer, it would cost a whole lot of money that colleges don't have, but I think lives being saved are a little more important than money. God bless.

Welcome to the Western Hemisphere Stalin Jr. People have fought and died in wars to avoid that kind of thing from happening here. It's a little thing called freedom. We are free to have an education of our choosing and are free to come and go as we like. What needs to happen is making getting guns a little harder. Or even not allowed at all. Right to bear arms was written up when there wasn't a police or military force in the 13 colonies. That issue has been taken care of over the last 200 years. The right to bear arms should be revoked. And if not revoked, made a little harder to get arms. And how did a person in America on a Student Visa get firearms anyway.
By the way, I've been in and out of six US military bases, I was rather shocked to see the lack of security. Some Private having a nap in a little booth is all I saw many nights.

Establishing a security system based on school IDs to enter the campus is a great idea!
Having a system where students, faculty, and staff could swipe their cards at the doors would be nice, however, what if individuals traveled in groups? That would make it easy for an individual to tag along with another pack of students.
Also, a majority of the universities across the nation are public universities. They belong to the state and cannot deny entrance to anyone onto the campus.
"If I'm spending a ton of money on college tuition to go to a school, I want to go to one where I feel safe."
I absolutely agree. I believe MORE of our tuition should be used to install more security cameras. I think at the beginning of each semester faculty should be required to briefly go over procedures with students in case they ever witness, have future concerns, or problems with any of the other individuals both on AND off campus.
Most of all, it is important to educate each and every individual that SILENCE is not the answer. Turning one's face the other way does not resolve the issues at hand.
When it comes right down to it, it takes every individual's actions and concerns to keep an environment safe and secure, not an ID card swiper or security camera.

That appears like a solid thought, yet i do no longer think of it would desire to artwork. Like for my college, we've 3 separate campuses, so this is huge, so the fee could be outragous, and training could probable sky rocket. and then what approximately all the people who come bypass to the college to confirm in the event that they desire to bypass there, well-known I see communities of people getting excursions of the campus. Then there are the events on campus, we've over 3 paintings galleries on campus, donning events that are open to public, fundraising events, a lodge, stay shows, and so forth. I want that some thing like your speaking approximately would desire to ensue yet i do no longer think of this is truthfully feasible. the suited subject is to have an ironed out emergency plan for the campuses.

no, because in the case of Cho, I think he would have still done what he did. Maybe not at school but maybe at a church or a market or a mall. The idea is deep rooted. Parents not wanting to see or admit that their child is touched. People need to get their children diagnosed and eventually medicated. I think alot of people turn the other cheeks(family/friends). For instance, I knew this kid when I was young and he killed his pet bird, I did not tell. I knew it was wrong and I looked at him differently, but never I told. Well, today he has a long rap sheet, arson is just one of them.

No money for any of it. High schools pay minimum wages to "security guards", college kids who need extra money.
I repeat THERE IS NO MONEY for serious security and you think they are going to rebuild entire colleges??
The odds are against being killed on campus. More people are killed in car crashes every day in the USA involving drunks. Worry about that.

With thousands of students coming and going it would take forever to check everyone's I.D. Overall campuses are very safe. The odds of tragedies like the one at VT happening are very small.

i think that's alittle extreme, but I'd compromise. I think doors should lock automatically when shut and I think professors should report ANY odd behavior that could develop into something worse. Its better to spend alittle more money on counciling and be on the safe side then turn a blind eye and get shot.

Yeah, because knowing the college I went to, everyone would show up at the same exact time and the line would be horrendous and you would be late for class no matter what and then Mr. Simmons would give you his angry eyes punctuated by those mangy eyebrows. No thank you ma'am.
