If we could, that Va. Tech. shooter could have been shot dead before he got to kill as many as 3 people....it never would have gotten as high as 32. Think about it.
In fact, a lot of other massacres could have been thwarted as well...simply because there would have been someone armed and SANE there to take out the shooter!

Though it could have prevented a mass shooting like at VT. I would have to say no. There would be a lot more individual killings because people would break out there guns if they lose their temper because of a fender bender or something else minor.

Sorry to burst your bubble but a very low percentage of people actually owned or carried guns in the old west. That's just in the movies.
So, let's run your scenario of everybody packing heat.
The shooter enters the classroom. He pulls out his weapon and starts shooting. Several of the students pull their weapons and shoot back. In the chaos that results, the rest of the students pull their weapons and see a classroom full of students shooting at each other. Which one is the original shooter? How many of your classmates are a part of the killing team? When is it safe to stop shooting?
Do you really believe there would have been less dead? Not me.

It wouldn't be safer, but you'd have a higher chance of living, I guess, if you could kill the guy and knew your rights. I think it's dumb.

Here in Virginia it's perfectly legal to strap your six gun on and wear it to class. If the good citizens neglected to do so, whose fault is that?

except for the fact that a number of western towns, people had to check their guns when they arrived and could only pick them up when leaving.
