They somehow become separated for some time and the journey of finding one another is long and arduous, but worthwhile in the end.
They cannot be together due to family constraints, social obligations, morals, ethics or ideals, personality disorders, unfortunate circumstance, etc, etc, etc.

She and partner are building/remodelling their house ans she falls for the contractor. Their trysts are what's taking the renovation so long!
(As you know, Contractors always stop and start and it takes way too long, and is way over budget.) Oh I need more granite (kiss kiss)! Oh, the wall is 1 inch outside regulation (hug hug)! etc.

It actually depends on the story, but how about maybe her lovewas bad at one time and now he's good. A dark past is behind him, but now he wants to change and he has to prove it to her.

Hmmm....it depends on the story, but here's a few:
-Girl learns her former love, who she thought was dead, is actually alive.
-Ex tries to kill her and her true love sacrifices himself saving her
-Girl finds out she's pregnant and it puts strain on relationship
-Girl loses baby and it puts strain on relationship
-Girl learns she is dying
-Girl is in horrible car accident and paralyzed
-Girl gets amazing job offer out of the country
-Girl's sister dies and she is left to take care of her young nieces and nephews
-Girl is raped and can't get past the trauma
-Girl gets amnesia and falls for someone else
