I would like some help with this... I am 17 weeks pregnant. And I was pretty sick last week and was tested for gestational diabetes... BUT my sugar came out low instead of high, to my surprise. It was 85, when normal is about 100. It wasn't per-say "abnormal" but it showed I may be slightly hypoglycemic. SOOOOO... my doctor said the right diet should fix my shakiness and sugar and such.... I have SUCH a hard time getting the right food because her guide lines for my "new diet" were this:
*low-carb (because those turn right into sugar- and not the good kind)
* higher protein
* whole-wheats/grains
Ok.................................. so she said I still need breads and stuff to fill up but not too much, what on earth is there to eat and snack on thats low-carb? All my snacks were usually crackers, a muffin.... sandwich...
Any suggestions?

It stinks doesn't it. Whole wheat and whole grain breads are better for you. Here is what i had today.

Breakfast- whole wheat english muffin with 1egg and slice of 2% cheese.

Snack- light and fit yogurt

Lunch- I brought whole wheat bread, lean turkey lunch meat, miracle whip and carrots

Snack- celery with peanutbutter

Dinner- not sure but probably chicken breast with brocolli and some sort of carb. Maybe some noodles

Snack- fresh fruit

Basically I try and even out my carbs and get more protein. With that diet plan I get 2 servings of carbs during breakfast lunch and dinner and then 1 carb with each snack. It will take time to get used to it. It's funny how the diet for Gestational diebetes and for hypoglycemia is similar. The biggest thing with hypoglycemia is to not go too long withough something like a snack. that is when you are in danger of dropping too low. The cabrs will give you the quick boost while the protein will sustain you longer till your next snack.

Try wheat bread, or anything with wheat in it. There are wheat thins, they have all different flavors of crackers, like ranch, sour cream and onion, or just plain with some cream cheese. If you like cottage cheese that's good for you too. Try to eat peanut butter, like a peanut butter and honey sandwich, or pb & j. There is a lot of low carb muffins. Also, no sugar added ice cream.

maybe try eating some crackers and cheese, or instead of making a sandwich just eat the cheese and meats that you would put on it. try celery and peanut butter. or lots of veggies and fruits, although be careful about which fruits you choose. maybe avoid strawberries because they are high in sugar. maybe some watermelon? cantaloupe and melons of some sorts. carrots tend to be high in sugar too. maybe some broccoli and mushrooms.

Anything green is really high in protein. Brocolli, fresh baby spinach, (those are my favorites) , boiled eggs or deviled eggs are really good also. Drink lots of milk!!

good old fashioned sex is the best exercise, pity you didn't have an indoor pool that would make you feel lighter and more relaxed. I sympathise with you this weather is not nice to be housebound and pregnant.
