I couldnt not consider artists such as Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Elvis and Madonna is because they did not write much (if any) of the music they sang.

For me to consider some one as a 'true' artist, they have to be able to write the music they sing (atleast 90% of it), not just have it handed to them by some else that wrote it.

Elvis (gospel, rock, show tunes, blues, ballads)

Whitney (before the drugs and crazy marriage and shows)

Pavoratti (just TRY and sing along, forget it. Talent beyond)

Barry Manilow (I know what you're thinking. And if you put James Brown up there, then you probably don't agree with me because JB had no range. But Barry has a voice that is just ...wow. Too bad he was most popular in the 70s and 80s because he can sing it all and his voice and songs are so emotional and full.

Christina Agulara (She can soooo sing. She gets better all the time. I can't wait until she gets out of the kiddie pop stuff and moves into more grown up sound. She floors me.)

Worst singer ever: Sanjaya

except for prince, all of the artists listed don't write their own music. that's not talent. yea, michael and aerosmith do sometimes, but it's rare. and madonna and michael and whitney don't even sing live. their concerts are lip synced.

1. bob dylan - over 600 songs that have been recorded by everyone.
2. jimi hendrix experience/band of gypsies - only recorded and toured for four years, but that was enough to seal his fate and the greatest.
3. the who - they still own the record for loudest concert. they invented the "rock opera" concept. individually great great musicians.
4. the beatles - i don't even need to say anything on this one.
5. the rolling stones - again, no reason needed.
