I have decided that I want to purchase a nice pearl necklace that will be passed down for generation. I don't know much about good brands or what type of pearl I should look for. Can anyone make any suggestions?

Mikimoto has extremely high quality pearl necklaces. Mikimoto gives guarantee to its product quality. It has set high standard for their reputation & service too. Their service level is equally good in Singapore & Japan. I had once fallen in love with a Mikimoto pearl ring at 1st sight when I shopped inTakashimaya at Ngee Ann City. I tried on it & could not bear to let go anymore. The sales lady had great knowledge on Mikimoto products. She was very happy to see me greatly attracted to the ring. However, while she was giving the ring the final touch before placing into the gift box, she discovered the side of the ring did not bear the Mikimoto stamp. She apologized & explained this would not be accepted by Mikimoto quality standard. She asked for my understanding to return this ring to Japan and offered to place an order to custom made another ring with similar design at no extra cost for me. I have since then owned eye-catching Mikimoto pearl with diamond ring, necklace, bracelet, watch, pen, mirror & key chain. Till to-date, all my Mikimoto pearls have not lost their beautiful glow. So, go for Mikomoto pearl necklace especially when you intend to pass it down to generation after generation. Mikimoto pearl - value for money.

I'm not aware of the types or brands because my pearls are from my grandmother who got them in spain, but i do know that many pearl necklaces are being unnaturally made and people are selling them as real pearls. Look carefully.

A good pearl should feel gritty or sandy, not smooth. The pearl should also appear fine grained, have minimal flaws, and should be pretty heavy.
Check out this website. It gives you the different kinds of pearls you can buy, a description of them, and basic shape and colors!

Good Luck! I love pearls too! I personally love the classic, round, creamy color pearl, but gray is lovely too!
