We allllllll know we've practiced moving as little as possible to use the remote. We've even practiced using it behind our backs or using our big toe to turn it off if the remote fell on the floor. So why do you think the people in movies and TV make such a big show of turning it off when we'd know what a press of the button would do? (Unless it's a cue to the soundman to cut the noise....hmmm...)

It's a way of making sure the audience reads what the intention of the actor is. Small gestures don't read if the viewer is looking at something else in the scene. Same reason why waitresses in ads put plates down incredibly slowly. So the audience has time to figure out that "Oh, she brought the food!"

ha-ha! in the old days, some remotes were pretty bad and not as accurate of sensitive as those used today. i can actually remember having to do that back then.

but now i don't even bother pointing my remote directly at the TV or device. the beams seem to find their way to where they need to go.

but you're right--why they do it now, i don't know. maybe it's a matter of an exaggerated stage direction so the viewer knows the actor has done it. if the actor would use the minimal movement that i do, viewers might not even be able to detect what was done.

good question!

Just like everything else in TV and Movies, they have to be overdramatic. Plus you could be right, could be a cue to soundman.

Lol That's sooo true I never thought of that...Tv is dramatic obviously so they have to show that they're cutting off the tv for all the slow people! lol Also I know I love to look for bloopers in shows so if they wouldn't of did it obviously I would've been the first to say "THAT WAS A BLOOPER!! The Tv cut off by itself!!"

Why do you hit the button harder when it appears not to work? Pointing it in the air will allow the best chance of the receiver picking up the signal.

It's for dramatic / illustrative purposes. A very deliberate use of the remote is intended to convey what is being done.

Maybe the batteries in their remotes are low. It could also be that they are attempting to direct it at the chip in the television.
