"The Premature Burial" - One of the few Poe stories that has a "good ending" (at least it's "good" for Poe). There was a movie with Ray Milland. You can read "The Premature Burial" online:

The Masque of the Red Death without a doubt. Poe uses such detail in creating those grand dance rooms...they just come to life. The color, the music, the drinks and gayety.... Poe brings it all to gether to form the most vivid dream, and then bring it crashing down to a nightmare so quickly with the gastly ringing of the ebony clock, blood lit room and finaly with the Red Death him or itself. One of my favorite stories.

"The Tell Tale Heart" because of the suspense it creates, and how he weaves the words feelings and actions together. He does an excellent job telling how the main character got there and was caught. The way he chose words and the plot is just amazing.
The link to a copy of the story is provided below.

Argh, I can't remember the title, but it spooked me!

It was about a hypnotist who was brought in to hypnotize a dying man, mostly just to relieve his pain, I think. If I remember aright, the guy died before the hypnotist brought him out of the hypnosis, and for a long time afterward, the man could still "speak." The creepiest part is that the body's mouth didn't move, but the tongue would flail around in its mouth as the ghost of the man spoke.

*shudders* It still gives me goosebumps.

The Masque of the Red Death. It's his most gruesome story, and it makes an interesting statement about mankind in the face of an epidemic.

I would have to say Murders on the Rue Morgue because of what it represents. It is the original "locked room scenario" murder mystery and the gold standard of all murder mysteries. All us murder mystery writers owe our very existance to that story. Pax - C
