Do NOT use DE in your sand filter - you must have a DE filter to be able to use DE in it. (refer to our blog post at http://www.diypools.com/diypools_blog.shtml for more info on the differences between DE and sand filters)

If you do have a sand filter, use a product called Zeolite - you can find it at any local pool retailer. Zeolite will capture dirt and debris down to 3 microns, while normal sand will capture up to 20 microns. DE will clean from 1 to 3 microns. Using Zeolite will ensure a cleaner, more sparkling pool. Do not use play sand - we recommend using only specially graded pool filter sand (#20 silica sand) that is 45 to 55mm in size.

Use Diatonaceous Earth (DE) for pool filters. It removes particles of 3 to 5 microns. It will also make you water "sparkle". Do not use play sand. It will not filter correctly and will clog your filter.
Sorry, I assumed (incorrectly) that you had a DE filter. Did not realize that until I read the next answer.
