Usually under leaves or overhangs where the rain won't get them.

They would hide under bus shelters, the flies will most likely not been keen on the rain, so they would do what the human instinct does, go to the near shelter, or carry on and do everything as fast as possible, then find shelter.

Some flies, maybe if the rain is to hard, could get caught and die in it, as i have seen some flies after a rain storm, floating in rivers, or in the puddles around the streets.

Not sure either. Next time it rains I will go out and see if I can see where they shelter. If I find out I will let you know.

Their life cycle is such that the adults have all lain their eggs and died before the autumn and winter. The eggs hatch for Spring. If it rains any other time, they just put up with it.

Seems to me they all come under the brim of my hat or rain jacket.

Those that don't probably find places on the undersides of roofs, leaves, loose bark, etc.
