Howdy John,

It's been very interesting reading through some of the answers...

Freemasons take a good man and make him better .. :)

as for the people who wrote negative things about people they have known who were Masons .. have they considered that these people were flawed characters already and would have done the things they did ( eg leave family cheat on wife take drugs) regardless to being a mason.

As you wrote it is SAID to be a secretive society ... but infact it really isn't .. there is a passage a word that is not permitted to be told to non-masons ... and i think rather than being something that is to be kept away from non-masons ... it is a loyalty test to masons.

I have read comments here about Masons being white supremicists .. WHAT a misguided view that it is .. and as for being against Christians .. Masons ask that their members have a faith in a diety ( sp), they are not anti christian or any other faith.

Women have always had a role in Freemasonary .. perhaps NOT in the ceremony and ritual but in the support of their husbands and their help in the community.

My Grandfather, two uncles and father were all Masons. My dad was ( sorry but the word is escaping me) the top guy in his lodge for a while. My father was a man of impecable character and morals, and he was extremely ethical . Same description applied to my grandfather and uncles. They would do anything to help anybody at any time...

I know a LITTLE about the Masons BUT I do know a lot of what is thought and said about them are nothing but lies and anti-mason propaganda,

It could be the other two percent you are unwilling to talk about. Freemasonry has been associated with secret societies almost as long as it has been in existence. If you want your organization to be more popular with young people, you have to enter their world, not just invite them into yours. What is it about your organization that could be attractive to young people in the first place? Young people are far more extrinsically motivated than mature adults, so they will want to get something concrete out of the experience. Do you offer scholarships, grants, work experience, or job training? Teenagers are often cautioned against joining organizations they can't talk about. If you don't understand this, look at the Universalist Life Church or The Reverrend Jim Jone's little group. Think about the Branch Davidians and their disagreement with the authorities. I'm sure you can begin to understand why teenagers and parents of teenagers are shy about joining even partially secret societies.

My father was the master of a local lodge and he did a lot of wonderful things with them, but somehow I never got involved at any level, although I have considered it. Basically, if I were to suggest a reason, it's because the "To be one, ask one" idea doesn't work with the youth of today. They want to be sold on something, not have to go looking for it. Life, for them, is all in advertising.

John L - I think you can tell from the answers you are getting just how much misinformation there is regarding the lodge. The younger generations don' ask about it because they are (1) too busy with modern day life, (2) their parents are not involved in a lodge, (3) they have heard the misinformation, and about a dozen other reasions I can think of.

While it is true we do hold some secrets, there is much about the lodge that is in the public domain. My Lightfoot's Manual of the Lodge sits on the bookcase in my living room for anyone who is interested to look at.

If anyone wants to learn the secrets of Freemasonry, ask one to become one.

And yes, there is a Masonic organization for women called The Eastern Star.

My grandfather was a mason, and what turned me off was the secresy and the fact that a criminal master mind could be head of the lodge and a number of his group could be cops who know who he is but don't do any thing about it for fear of reprisals within the mason community.
The masons have had a bad name in society and I think the youth of today just don't want to get involved with such an organisation.
The only way to get a good profile is to be 100% open, answer 100% of all questions And above all else clean out the lodges of bad people and show the youth why they should join tou, till then I'm affraid you will stay in the dark ages and will, like all sectarian groups, fizzle out into the dark forgotten pages of history.

My neighbor is a Grand Master or Lodge Master. He is one of the biggest liars and con-men around. He was voted out of being a county judge because of his dishonesty. He told me that only freemen could join the order, and that it has been that way all the way back to the egyptian times. Then he said there are a lot of Jewish Masons. Funny, they were slaves back then. He then said that African Americans could not join because they were slaves. He contradicted himself so badly that I actually told him he sounded nuts.

Maybe it's because most of us could care less about the Freemasons.

Well, except for the money I earn from eBay selling their old junk.

I had a friend whose father was a Freemason. He never talked about it. But, he did end up walking out on his family, and he started using drugs. I was always told by his daughter that it was like a mafia of some sort. I never really knew the truth. I always did wonder about that though.
