my wife was going on a field trip with my daughter today and last night she asked if she could use the digital camera that belongs to my work (which i do not own). i had some picture on the camera i would be downloading for a report and said i really couldn't allow her to borrow it. I am allowed to bring the camera home and it has kept us from buying one on our own. i bring it home on weekends and often during the week. She also has taken to using my cell phone (again we personally don't own one) when she goes shopping or on small day trips. The phone is on the blink and i didn't offer for her to use it because i was going to take it back to our IT guy today and ask him to have it fixed. She was upset i didn't offer the phone and also upset i didn't offer the camera. i will be needing the camera and so said i was selfish and couldn't believe i refused her. what if my boss said, go take a picture, today and i didn't have the camera. What am i going to say...my wife has it?

just an added detail.....she is spoiled when it comes to work expectations. she runs the family business and up until this January worked about 2 hours a day. now she's working 8 hours a day and you would think the world has stopped.

as far as the camera, she truly doesn't understand that although we have used it many times, it's during off-work time. when i had to go to work today, i needed the camera not only to take some pictures, but to off-load some that were on there. she is often very childish when it comes to things like this and she was shocked i said NO to her.

she is honestly wearing me out with her unrealistic expectations and constant verbal bantering.

Your wife needs to accept the fact that it isn't for her own personal use anytime she wants it... sounds like it's time the 2 of you go make some personal investments in a new camera and cell phone.

Perhaps you guys have identified a need to go buy a cell phone and a camera.

As long as you can hide behind the fact that you "might" need it for work, you will always believe you have done nothing wrong. But you set the bar by using it for personal use to begin with. So you are partially to blame for her having the expectation that she could use it when she needed to.

she clearly wants these dvices i understand that these are for work and she wants to use them during work hours. obviosly notgoing to work. BUT these are pracical every day things today. a cell phone in is a mere hundred bucks or free with the right plan. and digital cameras so she can take pictures of your daughter seems liek a good idea to me. if you have the digital camera from work and that has stopped you from buying your own you need to stop being cheap and buy one and leave work tools in your desk at work

Does your wife truly realize that you are solely responsible for that camera and need to have it available to you at all times at work? Sounds like she doesn't understand that if given the choice you would have let her take it but you just couldn't.

As far as the phone goes did she know that it was on the blink?

Talk to her and let her know you would have loved to let her take it if you could have but as you may very well need it at work you couldn't. If you end up not using it today perhaps saying to her tonight that if you were able to know, with out a doubt, that you would not have needed it you would have loved to let her take it as you would have loved to be able to share, at least by pictures, your daughters field trip.

I would put this to you this way.
If I were your employer and you lent a piece of company equipment to anyone without my explicit permission you would be in big trouble.

If she needs a camera so badly she should figure out a method of getting one. Decent snapshot digital cameras can be bought for less than $200.00. You are already getting paid ,right?
Is that worth losing your job over?

If you are my employee and you exhibited such poor judgment regarding your possession of company equipment
I would seriously rethink your continued employment.

Well you encouraged this behavior by bringing these things home for personal use when you shouldn't have. It's obvious you need your own phone and camera.....or at least get one for your wife. End of problem.

it isn't right to use the work phone and camera for personal use. i know many people do but it was wrong of your wife to assume she could use them. if something were to happen to either of them you would be held responsible for it. you did the right thing. she'll get over it.
