They are indeed a series. All 5 books return to events in the life of Becky Bloomwood, who continuously gets herself in more and more insane situations. You probably could read them each as individual books, or out-of-order, but you would probably miss some of the humor in the situations if you are trying to figure out the past history.

I really enjoy these books for "just for fun" reading. If you are looking for something that you only need one book, try "Can You Keep a Secret?" or "The Undomestic Goddess", both by Kinsella.

There are 5 books in all:
Confessions of a Shopaholic
Shopaholic Takes Manhattan
Shopaholic Ties the Knot
Shopaholic & Sister
Shopaholic & Baby

I know the storyline is a continuation with the same main character and I would assume you could read one without the others, but it might be more fun to start with the first. Titles for the books may differ in other countries (those are the US titles).

I haven't read them, so can't give you a for sure about skipping around. I think reading the first though would help you understand the main character, where she's coming from and why shes does what she does (and how she's gotten where she is). I've gathered that from reviews and summaries of the books. Maybe I've helped a bit in answering your question.

The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic (also titled Confessions of a Shopaholic) (2000) Shopaholic Abroad (also titled Shopaholic Takes Manhattan) (2001) Shopaholic Ties the Knot (2001) Shopaholic and Sister (2004) Shopaholic and Baby (2007) Can You Keep A Secret? The Undomestic Goddess Remember Me? (2008) Do these fit the bill for you...?

They are indeed related and while you don't have to read them in order, there is a natural progression both for the characters and also in the way that Kinsella has developed her own writing skill and the plots lines. It's not just about the books, it's also about the author. But I didn't begin with the first one, and I think I am still sane.

I've read most of them and it would seem to me that you would get most out of the series by reading them in order. However, I found the protagonist (Becky Bloomwood) really annoying and stopped reading the series after she got married.
