We live in NC and earlier this month we had a couple days in a row of hard freezes. Our crepe myrtles had already began to sprout new leaves but now they're damaged by the cold (withered and dead). What can I expect for this year and is there anything I can do?

don't worry. crepe myrtles are very resilient. just cut it back a little bit to where the leaves are disposed of and wait. they will flush back out. they bloom on old wood so by late may or june it should start blooming. if you haven't fertilized it recently i would lay some granular 12-12-6 slow release in may and september

Leave them alone, I have the same prob in Oklahoma, they are rebudding slowly. Bet they will still bloom this year. May be a little bit of tip death, but wait until they leaf out again before pruning to make sure. Of course with crepes you can trim severely and they'll still sprout back out, just bloom a little later.

not to worry wolf crepe myrtles are very hardy . i have seen these cut to one foot and they came back like gang busters . maby just a little time release fertillizer , that was suggested , and water if it don't rain . your crepe myrtles may come back thicker than before .

Hi neighbor, we got hit with freeze in SC too. Trim the dead wood off. Fertilize as normal. Myrtles are tough. they'll make it. They root in water.
