HI,
My male betta is making bubble nests, so he is ready to breed.
It will sound stupid but, if I don't get him a female, will he get depressed? I feel kind of sad, that he is making bubble nests and all and there is no female for him. Will he get depressed?
I don't wanna take the risk of getting him a female cos he is very aggressive.
Thanks guys, you all are very nice!!

You don't need to get him a female, males will do that when they are happy and healthy not just because they want to mate.

Yes he's ready to breed. Yes,it sounds stupid to think that a fish gets depressed.Don't anthropomorphize.Fish are not humans and they are not subject to depression. When fish appear depressed,it's always water quality that is causing it. Keep your fish in clean water and feed it well, and it will be just fine. If you wish to acquire a female be sure that she is in spawning condition as well as the male. This would entail a fish kept in the same quality of care as the male, great water and really excellent feeding. When a female is "ripe",plump, active, and showing a spawning tube(a 1 to 1.5 mm white triangle in the front part of the vent) she should be placed in an adjacent tank or in a divided tank where the male can see her. When a bubble nest is built, add the female or remove the divider. There is much more to this procedure than I can add here,a good book on spawning Anabantids would save a lot of time, money, and grief. Spawning these fish can be a rewarding and fascinating experience. If you decide to try this please do the research first, including how to care for the fry after spawn. It's sort of complicated, but not that difficult if you are prepared.Good luck.-----PeeTee

He will be fine. I have bred mine. If you do get a female for him chances are they will just end up killing each other. They fight like crazy - even male and female.
