...should I clean it out? Maybe just a harmless fungus or algae?

It's most likely just harmless fungus growing on uneaten food and fish waste. I would suggest cleaning it out and do remember, it can be an indication of over feeding or inadequate cleaning. Take care not to feed the fish more than they can eat in just a few minutes and remove any uneaten food. Be sure you do a water change every week and use a gravel siphon to clean the gravel as you go. That should take care of the problem.

I used to have something similar in my tank. I think it represented some form of leftover tissue from my dead fish. It was in my tank for a while before I decided to remove it. Like you, I did not experience any bad stuff with it hanging around the aquarium. It had to go when I was doing my regular aquarium maintenance. I guess it is your preference to keep it or siphon it out. As long as your fish are not bothered, I do not see any reason to be alarmed.
