The story of Romeo and Juliette is the classic love story and deals with the theme of forbidden love. This is a universal theme and would work in any country or culture in the world, because young people often fall in love with someone who is totally inappropriate for them.

Edith Wharton said it best when she said "For love to be love, it must be forbidden, it must fail, it must carry the doomed lovers down with it." This is a statement that illustrates Wharton's ideas in her novels (Ethan Frome for example) but also it illustrates what Romeo and Juliette is all about.

What happened with these two star-crossed lovers is absolutely no different than what happens everyday in America. This is who we are and who we want to be, the young lovers who fall for the wrong person. We always hate the consequences, however.

Wow. If this is a homework assignment, your teacher needs to find a new line of work.

"Relevancy" is the absolute WORST excuse for a topic when dealing with Shakespeare's plays. As though plays that are STILL being read/studied/performed 440 years after the fact need to PROVE their relevancy...! Sheesh.
