I can't tell if this is for an opinion piece or a fact piece. You have received incorrect answers. Here are a few facts about the death penalty system with sources listed below.

The death penalty costs much more than life in prison.

The death penalty risks executing innocent people (123 already exonerated) and DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides. It is not a guarantee against the execution of innocent people.

The death penalty is not a deterrent. Homicide rates are higher in states with the death penalty. Most killers do not even think they will be caught (if they think at all).

Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. Supermax prisons are terrible places to spend the rest of your life. Life without parole, like the death penalty, keeps criminals from reoffending.

The death penalty can be very hard on families of murder victims.

The death penalty does not apply to the worst of the worst. It applies to defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was executed or even came close??

48% of Americans prefer life without parole and 47% prefer the death penalty. We are learning.

The main advantage is that it is a deterrent. I THINK it does prevent some crime because ot people being afraid to take a risk to commit a crime when their lives are at stake. I KNOW that each person, after the execution is carried out, will NEVER commit another crime. Also, after he is executed, I KNOW that he will no longer be an expense to the taxpayer.

Capital punishment is a form of Hammurabi's code, the ancient law "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." The benefit is that it is a true form of justice; when one kills someone, the only true justice is death.
