Yellow ribbons became popularized toward the end of the Viet Nam war. Tony Orlando and Dawn did a song called Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree. At the time alot of people were waiting for Viet Nam POW's to come home, and people wore special bracelets. Each bracelet had the name of a POW on it. We would all watch when a group was flown home. When "your" POW got home, then you could take off the bracelet. It was never quite clear to me if Tony Orlando was singing about someone who was imprisoned in jail, or in a POW camp... The yellow ribbon has come to symbolize friends, loved ones, and sweethearts waiting for someone to return home. It is most often used in war time ever since. Don't know if it had any significance prior to that...

It was used in a song by Tony Orlando and Dawn. It's was a story about a guy being released from prison and if his family wanted him back then he asked them to tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree. If he didn't see the ribbon then he would just keep going because he would know they didn't want him to come home. They did place the ribbon on the tree and welcomed him home.

Isn't there an urban legend about a girl that had a yellow ribbon around her neck? Her lover begged her and begged her to explain its significance. Finally when she untied the ribbon her head fell off.
