Recently I arrived back to my flat after a weekend away. My flatmate had left dirty plates, cups and glasses all over the kitchen and the bin unemptied, even though she said she would clean up. She repeatedly acts like this. I'm naturally a tidy person, if i have dirty dishes i just wash them, simple as that. Why do some people not clean up after themselves??

lazy, dont think about it. if the dishes are urs then tell her she cant use them unless she cleans them. if she still doesnt then tell her she cant use them and must use paper plates (i did this for past roomie and it kinda works)

hi, sad to say they train some people to do this...they are called "Chefs", not cooks!
i worked out a "Chef" is anyone that wants to create (a mess) that can find or pay :-) any other mug to do it for them!
Chef also means husband /partner/flatmate . that waits cos they know it will be done...by you! not them!!
the smartest chefs even get paid cash, the more bowls and plates the higher their wages..weird huh?
seriously, i am a walking mess, i live alone and so i have no-one but dogs to blame..hmm? they do add to it! But - when i cook, i am economical and remove and clean as i go. cos it means more work if i don,t and cos i have a small space to work in. but everywhere else...i scatter! i feel for your problem, once i Was neat..and never sat down ,always tidying etc. all i got was exhausted, and unthanked!
nowadays, if your flatmate did this to me.
.i am afraid i would refuse to do their work! and--eat out, until it,s done. if?you possibly can, well, do so!
or say , you will do it ...but! your hourly rate is ..?10$ an hour..(stove/oven..More! )if they say what?? well say , my lifes time , is worth more- but I am doing it "mates rates" and smile:-).
i hope you wise up a lot faster than i did! (16years! duh me!)cos you know..if you don,t , cleaning up after everyone takes your own life away from you!
i even drive myself nuts (eventually) with my mess! and then i do clean up, and i fell so much better! and so does the house.
don,t deprive your friend of such joy!
:-) and maybe show them this mail??

I suffer from this with my house mates, they'll have takeaway and leave of food all over the side and never do their dishes on the same day, normally about 3 days later if I'm lucky, it's called LAZY and there really isn't an excuse, I mean fine if it's once in a while, we all have days where we are in a rush, but I don't get why people are OK with living in their own mess. Don't worry you are not alone in your confusion!

Some are slobs who think that everyone else is going to clean up after them. What your flatmate needs is a momma who will take her by the scruff of her neck and make her clean up. But barring that, try talking to her. And if that doesn't work, one of you should find a different place to live: It's not fair that you should have to clean up after someone who is supposedly grown up.

Mind you, I don't like cleaning either. But it is a lot easier if it's done when it needs to be done instead of allowed to sit around.

Because people are by nature dirty and lazy, especially when they don't live in their OWN house... And even more when the place is shared!!! Because there is always some poor idiot who cannot stand a dirty place who will clean for everybody else!

Bad manners is the answer to your question. Chuck her out or build a nice pig sty for her to live in.
I'm naturally tidy too and believe in the old adage of "Don't put it down, put it away".
Failing that, get another, but tidier, flatmat.

if you even sometimes clean up after her, then you are training her to act this way. just tell her straight up that she either cleans up or gets out. you might have to tell her for a while but keep at it.
I also like the paper plates idea
