The most important responsibility is not to the nation or to the church or to anybody else.
The real responsibility is to ourself.
And it is that we have to live our life according to our own light and we have to move wherever life leads,Without any compromise...

The whole mankind is like a interwoven fabric. We are equally responsible for ourselves and our surroundings. We cannot isolate ourselves from the group and maintain our individuality. Our own acts, even if they are out of free will and without any compromise have some impact on our surroundings.

Besides, how do we make sure that our own light leads us to right path. We need something to compare, something to inter-relate, to justify whether our actions are right or wrong. One's responsibonsibiity towards oneself should be to take care that he/she lives a good life and develops harmony with it's surroundings. Also not to forget, that we have to rely on others on a number of occasions to accomplish our own goals. So life without so called compromise is not possible. What one calls compromise can also be called co-operation. 'Compromise' is the word that allows one's ego to come into action. When we unwillingly co-operate, we call it compromise. But what if we co-operate willingly all the time? In that case one would never feel that he has been rejected by the surroundings, but instead identify oneself as an integral part of it.

All the best...

:-)

I fully agree with u that our most important responsibility is to ourselves. We have to live with ourselves and whatever face saving device we may use to put up a face to the world, ultimately our own soul will question u for all ur deeds. But we r not living in isolation and we cannot do without others. Whatever course of conduct u choose then be prepared for the consequences and do not blame others for the same. U must own every action and reaction. I feel if u work in larger interest and no other life is affected by ur decision then do what u feel right and have the courage of conviction. Do not have double standard whatever u believe in apply to others life events also.

I think as a individual we do have a responsibility towards ourselves, there's no doubt about that, but man is a social animal and hence we also have certain responsibilities towards others.

I think successfully essaying our different roles in life and at the same time not compromising our ethics is the most important responsibility of every human being.

Wherever life leads, without any compromise, is fine if you`re a drifter or a hobo. Looking out for yourself first is selfish & there are some recently deceased HEROES at Va. Tech, who showed perfectly what`s important, everyone but yourself. Don`t get me wrong, you do have to look out for yourself, or others will walk all over you, but when the time comes to step forward, step big ,because that`s responsibility.

Good question... STAR!

I agree and I would say even more emphatically....Not just the most important, rather the ONLY responsibility is towards our own self.... all else flow therefrom. We are kidding ourselves if we think we can be primarily responsible for anyone else or anything else. It is just our own self that we really own and responsibility is the other side of the coin called ownership!!

To keep self body "said to be complete Universe" healthy. One is the custodian of this body, which is not own but kept in the custody of self. By keeping it intact one does good or bad in this world.
To do this one has to regulate the management of his 24 hours with self discipline and also within the re-sources available to him.
I take this way that if it is done rest would be easier.

I agree with u to a certain extent on this that the first responsibility is to us .... BUT .... here comes the 'responsible' part of the responsibility! :) .......

in this quest of being responsible to ourselves - who sets the limits to our actions? - in being responsible to ourselves wot if we are hurting people close to us? ......

here i feel , comes the role of some kind of governance - be it state or God - which teaches us responsibility to self ALONG with responsibility to those around us - coz ultimately we live in a society - if all were to have this philosophy in life - the only act left would be of selfishness and/or hedonism....

I agree with you: the most important responsibility we have is to ourselves. We can't be anyone else but the persons we are and we can't change anyone but ourselves. We have to get our **** together and take care of ourselves before we can really love and care for anyone else. But part of taking care of ourselves is learning how and when to compromise, when to make sacrifices and let go of the ego in order to do what we know is right.

Boy, it's obvious y'all don't have any kids...
My twelve year old daughter said the other day "All I want to do is satisy myself." Are you all 12?

After reading the others comments...
1) Grow up.
2) Do you really think this is such a deep topic of discussion?
