It's a movie. Never rely on Hollywood to give you fair and accurate information on anything.
Anyway, 300 is very loosely based on the Battle of Thermopylae.

The movie is just one part of a history in which relationships between Greeks and Persians was defined.
The fact is that Greeks and Persians traded with each other long before the outset of the Persian wars. When the Persian wars did start, it had really nothing to do with the Greeks - it started when an ambitous Persian governor in Asia minor failed to secure the independence of his own little kingdom.
Knowing that the Persian king was pissed off, the Persian governor turned to the Greeks for help screaming that the Persians had done him the injustice. The Persians were angry that the Greeks got involved in a situation that really had nothing to do with them.
While the war did unite Greece under a common cause, the Greek states continued to fight and intrigue against each other. That the Persians harboured no real hatred against the Greeks was seen in that the Athenian leader, Themistocles, escaped to Persia after he was voted out of office.
The movie portrays one side of Persian-Greek relationship, but there is other levels to that relationship in a much broader historical context.

It is not a lie in so far as:-
1. Xerxes did invade Greece as part of his attempt to build a world empire
2. He was held up by a party of 300 Spartan soldiers at the Pass of Thermopolyae.
3. This led to the ultimate defeat of the Persians and the end of the idea that tXerxes would conquer the west
Read the book 'Persian Fire' by the historian Tom Holland which will give you a far better idea of what actually happened than the outpourings of Hollywood.

Two things my friend, never trust a movie, and never completely trust wikipedia either (you never know who wrote the article or how trustworthy they are).
Fact is, like today you will find people of different nations mingling with each other, trading, etc. But Xerxes did in fact try to invade Greece. There was a battle at Thermopylea where 300 Spartians along with about 700 others fought the Persians under Xerxes.

Note for 'Alfthearpenter' (above).... Unfortunately, you are right. Hollywood takes the histories of other countries and distorts them beyond measure in the name of 'entertainment'. Then young Americans watch the resulting film and think that it depicts 'real history'.
So I can see where the questioner is coming from - especially if she is an Iranian (Persian).
A report from the USA last year(?) said even top rank American universities were getting concerned at the poor knowledge of world history exhibited by potential History students. The report concluded that many candidates had gained their 'history' from Hollywood films/videos. Incidentally, rumour has it that Hollywood is thinking of producing a film in which America wins the 'Battle of Britain'!! (Tom Cruise in the lead role?)

the fact that xerxes might havent hurt greek people doesnt mean that the battle at Thermopylaes (or hot gates in the movie) never happened. this battle remains of great importance because it ,partly, defined the future of greece and europe because what would have happened if persians didnt stop in greece and managed to conquer the whole europe?apart from all those it is just a movie based on a comic book .it is NOT history

And one in conserving with a image comic no longer an encyclopedia. i'm nonetheless surprised that folk are growing riled over a movie that not in any respect, repeat not in any respect, claimed to be the actuality. yet Persians from Europe with blond hair is in basic terms too a lot. the position contained in the international did you get that techniques???

You mean Xerxes wasn't really an 8ft tall gold man-god?!? OMG! Hollywood has lied to me!
Now, step back from the cliff and take a deep breath. 300 is a movie -- based on a graphic novel. It's not a documentary.
