I didn't read your poetry, but that's not really important. If you love writing you should stick with it. Besides, not every single thing you write is going to be great. A writer's world is one of rejection: if you'll a writer, understand that not everyone is going to love your stuff. Besides, like everything you do whether it be basketball or video games, writing takes practise. William Shakespeare didn't write Romeo and Juliet when he was three if you know what I mean. The more you write, the more you improve. It takes practise, practise, practise. Another way to improve is to study the writing of other poets and writers---study their techniques. You don't have to use their techniques completely, but knowing what techniques there are will help you develope you own.

The point is, if you really want something, don't let anyone tell you can't get. Believe in yourself, have a little bit of determination and a lot of faith, and you'll go far.

After there once was a boy named Theodor who, in college, wanted to be an artist, but the teacher told him he'd never succeed. He tried to take writing courses, but the teacher told him to give up. Later---that boy become our brilliant Dr. Seuss.

The only question that can decide if you should quit writing or not is one only you can answer:

Do you enjoy writing? Does it give you pleasure?

I'd assume, from the sheer number of poems you have up, that the answer is "yes!"

If it is, don't quit. It really doesn't matter what other people think of your poems - you don't have to be a professional writer, after all. Writing just for yourself is what counts - it doesn't matter if your family (or people here on Yahoo!Answers) like your poems.

All that said, I've read a few of your poems, and they're not garbage.

They just want you to be something more respectable, like maybe a pimp or a drug dealer.
Being a writer requires you to have thick skin while yet having a sensitive soul. This is especially true for poets. You have to handle rejection from publishers and family alike. And only the publishers will ever stop rejecting you.
It's hard to make a living off of just writing, and impossible off of just poetry. You'll have to get a job. Try to get one in the industry. That's sure to drive the family nuts.

As for your poems... Only one really stood out. "A Challenge". You really hit the nail on the head with that one. The others, we'll call those practice.

i'm on your boat right here -- I paintings for a daily and that i write fiction, nevertheless it form of feels the long hours and huge writing load detract from my want to the touch a keyboard after paintings. nonetheless, i like fiction and that i'm commencing as much as love journalism. i'm doing crime, and that i might desire to assert the paintings time table isn't straight forward to get used to. that's a 8-5 job yet regrettably there is many times added time once you're overlaying, case in point, a shooting at an afternoon care (I have been given the call on the instant at 6, the top of my shift. i ended the tale for print at 10:30 p.m.). yet once you love it, you love it. nevertheless journalism and imaginitive writing are oftentimes a good distance from a similar playing field -- until eventually you write existence or columns -- you're making a residing from what you incredibly need to do (writing). how a lot of human beings can say that?

Okay, I've seen some of your work. I don't think it's garbage, it's you. Poems say a lot about you--what you believe and how you feel. Don't quit. If it makes you happy, go ahead and write to your heart's content. Write until you can't write no more. Let it ALL out! I've got a passion for writing and I just can't be happy if I'm not working on a piece, so I know what you're talking about. Go on, friend, do your stuff!

If it makes you happy writing, why give it up? Try writing in a different genre. I'm completely useless at poems, so I tend to stick to the style of writing I'm comfortable with. First person narrative is a good start.

I"ve read a few and I'm not going to give you my opinion of your writing. Poems are a form of self expression, and if you want to and enjoy expressing yourself in that way, all the power to you. In the end, it is not what other people think of your poems that counts, it is what you think of them.

please don't stop writing! i read some of them and they are not garbage, don't believe what your family says. your poetry is very expressive of yourself with an unreal perception of the world.although i absolutely loved your poetry others might not, but this is no reason to doubt yourself. even if no one liked your work, you should never stop writing if you have a passion for it! Never! your family might feel jealous that you have such a gift, which is why they discourage it. the only reason you should stop is if you no longer wish to write.

If you love doing it, then keep doing it. If your family doesn't like your poetry, then don't show it to them. Find people who do support you. It's extremely unkind of your family to say you are an embarrassment. Would they rather you played video games all day? Writing is great exercise for your brain. Video games will just give you arthritis.

Don't quit. Writing is the best form of expression we have.

Keep it up!
