I would have thought you would know this yourself, Richie ;-)

Actually Im not sure anyone knows this for sure. It is supposed to originate from Jaffa oranges, being a "juicy" delivery. I am sure you know it is used to refer to an almost unplayable ball.

Jaffa - "A delivery that is too good for the batsman, and leaves him groping hopelessly at thin air or (as the bowler will hope) dismisses him"

Jaffa in Hebrew means "beauty". So in there might lie the source. Am not sure who or how or when this term got so popular.

I don't know how many Hebrew words have become common place in cricketing circles, but in Australia, and presumably elsewhere, there is a little red circular sweet known as Jaffas, and they are sweet orange flavoured hard shells with chocolate inside. Bit like miniture cricket balls.
So my guess is that it comes from a ball which is sweet...

A delivery that is too good for the batsman, and leaves him groping hopelessly at thin air or (as the bowler will hope) dismisses him is termed as Jaffa

The Jaffa orange is without seeds, therefore produces nothing, nothing can be produced from a Jaffa. For a batsman it is impossible to produce from a unplayable ball, the result is zero.

Jaffa (also corker)
" an exceptionally well bowled, practically unplayable delivery, usually but not always from a fast bowler."

I searched the net but there's no info as to where the term came from. the second poster has a point though.

Jaffa is the best delivery for the bowler aspect.

It is thought to have come from the name of an orange, the fruit. They are very juicy and this in the same way, refers to a very juicy delivery by the bowler. It is such an accurate delivery, that it is unplayable by even the best of batsmen, they can't avoid getting out.
