I usually start out with a fire type, but I think the penguin is cuter. So when I get the game, I going to choose the penguin.

wait until the game comes out buy both or 1 and play 2 find out which starter from each game is the best starter.

http://www.gamefaqs.com will have the answer. In the last couple of games they tried to balance the starters a little, but you are right, one does usually make early game play, or early gyms, easier.

i havent played pokemon since the yellow version with pikachu, that was so long ago....but since i ordered it to see what all the fuss is about i may start out with a water type (dont know what its name is)

i think the penguin water type. but thats because i hate grass types and the fire type is a monkey. i hate monkeys!! also, water types are always useful :)
