Plants has properties like
Photo tropism ( Grow towards sun light --stem )
Hydro tropism( Grow towards water -- roots)
Geo tropism( Grow towards water -- roots)
We have many other tropisms like chemotropism etc..

All plants must compete for sunlight. Trees compete best by growing tall and placing rivals (and their seedlings) in their own shadows. Try to balance a tall beam on one end and you will discover that the least energy is required when the beam is perpendicular with the ground. Flexing of the tree in strong wind helps develop the strength required to resist the wind but a leaning tree may be in big trouble and may come down making room for a taller competitor.

They are perpendicular to the earth coz the get sunlight from overhead.
The seed aligns itself in such a manner that it can extract sufficient water from ground and also sufficiently absorb sunlight from top.
Perpendicular position is the most efficient one for a tree, so it grows like that.

They are not always perpendicular to earth. Sometimes they grow in the direction of light, or touch.
The are perpendicular to earth because of gravity which pulls certain parts down, to erect it while it is young.

sorry it is not always so. Generally trees grows towards the sunlight. So if there is no obstacle then they will be perpendicular to earth otherwise they show bending towards the sunlight for photosynthesis.

If they were parallel to the surface of the earth, half of their leaves would be underground.
Seriously, they grow upward to maximize the sunlight they can catch on their leaves. That's where green plants get their metabolic energy from, photosynthesis.
