All snakes produce eggs. Some lay the eggs before they hatch and others, like the cobra, keep the eggs inside their body until they hatch, then expel the live young and then reabsorb the egg waste. Live births are just snakes that kept their eggs inside until their young hatched.

To my knowledge, there are NO ANIMALS IN EXISTENCE THAT CAN GIVE BIRTH TO LIVING BABIES "AND" LAY EGGS TOO. There are three types of birth in the animal kingdom: Oviparous, Oviviparous, and Viviparous. Oviparous is laying eggs outside of the body, like a bird, a frog, a lizard, or some snakes. These eggs develop outside the body and hatch later on. Oviviparous is "retaining" the eggs "inside" the body where they develop until just before laying. Then they are laid when the babies are ready to hatch. The egg "shells" are nothing more than a membrane. Some snakes do this. Viviparous is giving live birth like a human or an ape, and a few other lower forms. The baby develops inside the body and is not born until fully formed.

Some snakes show oviparity (lay eggs) Ex. King cobra
Some snakes (20%) show viviparity (give birth to young ones)
This way of reproducing is most common in cold areas, possibly because it helps females to control the temperature of the developing eggs. By basking in sunlight, a pregnant snake can keep her eggs warm and speed up the rate at which they develop so that the young will be born before the onset of cold winter weather. Live births also benefit some snakes that do not live in cold climates. For example, most sea snakes give birth to live young. This frees them from the need to lay eggs on land, where they are less agile and more vulnerable to predators.
