A push is more a nudge towards, whereas a shove is enough to send you over the cliff.

hmmm... a push is more of a steady pressure....
a shove is more sudden and violent
a push can be soft OR hard......
so... if one comes to another... or... the push gets
strong enough to have the power of a shove....
it would still have the constant pressure behind it.....
its a physics question really....
why they say it that way... is prob to confuse us
English is weird.....
I made better grades in Russian anyway....

Push is a little bit more gentle than a shove. Think about it... "He PUSHED her into the pool"... "He SHOVED her into the pool" It just sounds more graphic.
