did u mean (1/3)x -1/6 = -11/12? or 1/(3x) -1/6 = -11/12?

If (1/3)x -1/6 = -11/12,
Multiply by 12 throughout: 4x - 2 = -11
4x = -11 + 2
4x = -9
x = -9/4

If 1/(3x) -1/6 = -11/12,
1/(3x) = -11/12 + 1/6
1/(3x) = -11/12 + 2/12
1/(3x) = -9/12
1/(3x) = -3/4
Cross-multiply:
(-3)*(3x) = 4
-9x = 4
x = -4/9

1/3x -1/6=-11/12

1/3x= +1/6-11/12 add 1/6 to both sides

1/3x=+2/12-11/12

1/3x=-9/12= -3/4 mult both sides by 3

x = -9/4

1/3X-1/6 = -11/12
1/3X = -11/12+1/6
1/3X = -11/12+1*2/6*2
1/3X = -11/12+2/12
1/3X = -11+2/12
1/3X = -9/12
1/3X = -3/4
-4/3 = 3X

Assume question should read as:-
(1/3).x - 1/6 = - 11/12
4x - 2 = - 11
4x = - 9
x = - 9/4
PS you will receive many different answers because question has not been presented clearly.
As you have presented the question , it reads as:-
1/(3x) - 1/6 = - 11/12 which leads to a different solution to:-
(1/3). x - 1/6 = - 11/12.
Worth noting this for future reference.
Cheer!

First add 1/6 to both sides....

1/3 x = -11/12 + 2/12 (i.e. 1/6 = 2/12)

1/3 x = -9/12

Multiply both sides by 3.....

x = -27/12 = -9/4 or = -2 1/4

2007-04-18 05:14:46 · answer #6 · answered by Doctor Q 6 · 1 0

1/3x - 2/12 = -11/12
1/3x = -11/12 + 2/12
1/3x = -9/12
1/3x = -3/4 (multiply 3 at both sides)
x = -9/4

2007-04-18 12:11:06 · answer #7 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

1/(3x) - 1/6 = -11/12

1/(3x) = -11/12 + 1/6

1/(3x) = -11/12 + 2/12

1/(3x) = -9/12

1/(3x) = -3/4

Invert it

3x/1 = -4/3

Divide both side by 3:

x = -4/9

If it says "1/3 of x" then Doc Q is right.

If it says "1/(3x)" then I'm right ; )

(1/3)x - 1/6 = - (11/12)

(1/3)x = - (11/12) + 1/6
x = 3 [-(11/12) + 1/6]
x = 3(-78/72)
x = - 3.25 ; 1/3(-3.25) - 1/6 = -(11/12)
-(11/12) = - (11/12) check!!!!!!!!
hope it helps
