This is a question posed by my Chemistry teacher. She did NOT accept the answer that Hydrogen is a gas and not metal. If you have the answer, can you provide me with the source/webpage as well? THANKS!!

Well that hydrogen is a gas is not enough of a reason, as all the elements can be gaseous.

Hydrogen isn't a metal though, which the rest of group one (The Alkaline Metals) are.

Hydrogen is a non-metallic element at normal temperatures and pressures, but experiments have shown that gaseous hydrogen can behave like a metal under extreme conditions (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallic_hydrogen ).

Hydrogen makes hexagonal crystals, whereas the Alkaline Metals all make cubic crystals.

Apart from that, I wouldn't know what to tell Her!!

It is - Group 1 (IA,IA): the alkali metals or hydrogen family/lithium family, Hydrogen, with a solitary electron, is usually placed at the top of Group 1 of the periodic table, but it is not considered an alkali metal; rather it exists naturally as a diatomic gas. Under extremely high pressure, such as is found at the core of Jupiter, hydrogen does become metallic and behaves like an alkali metal; see metallic hydrogen.

Even though Hydrogen has only one electron in its valence shell just like the alkali metals, But it is also similar to the halogens as it has only one electron less for acquiring the nearest noble gas configuration. Hence, it provided with a separate position in the periodic table.

It's in itss own little area since it can behave like group 1 or group 7 elements, It can lose its one electron to become stable liek the group one elements or it can gain one and become have a full valence liek the group 7 elements.

Hydrogen has only one electron and ionizes to give cations like metals.
