The media reported that it was a chinese foreign exchange student. Then a south korean student. But actually, he immigrated with his family when he was 8 yrs old and grew up in the states. Culturally, he's an american. Legally he's an immigrant.
The media is misleading us by continuously saying he's a South Korean student when he grew up here. This can lead to racial hate crimes towards Asian-Americans. Some of his victims were asian, but the media doesn't emphasize this enough. There was no racial bias in his killings.
Even now VaTech students of asian ethnicity are traveling in groups in fear of hate crimes. We're talking about americans (born and raised) who are asian walking in groups in fear of racial hate crimes. Already a chinese alumni, wrongly mistaken to be the killer, received hate emails.
I'm completely shattered by what happened at VaTech. I haven't felt like this since I lost my friend on 9/11.
My prayers go out to the families and students.

It's not wise to tie race to this when some of his victims were asian. He shot at everyone: white, black, asian, middle eastern, indian, jewish, etc.
I hope our country responds in love rather than inflict pain or hate on innocent people.
